Charleston Newlin

Charleston, who will be starting 5th grade at Kraft Meadows Intermediate School this fall, is known for his calm presence, quick smile, and determination that sets him apart. Though he experienced a stroke before birth that affects the use of his right hand, wrist, ankle, and arm, Charleston doesn’t let that stop him. Instead, he’s found creative ways to play and compete at a high level.

He pitches, plays first base, and even swims competitively—all with one arm. Whether he’s throwing strikes, making bare-handed plays on the mound, or tracking down hits at first base, Charleston shows up every game ready to give his all. This past season, in a high-stakes tournament game, Charleston pitched five strong innings, went 5-for-5 at the plate, and delivered a walk-off hit in extra innings. It was a moment that reflected not just his skill, but his grit and quiet confidence.

Off the field, Charleston brings that same energy and warmth to every area of his life. He shares a bedroom with his 3-year-old brother, Woodrow, and often pretends to be his teacher at night, helping him learn letters, numbers, and pronunciations. He’s a loving big brother to two younger sisters, Mabel and Clementine, and is the kind of kid who always offers a hug at school or cheers them on in the little moments.

He loves playing video games—particularly Fortnite, which he’s figured out how to master with one hand. Friends are amazed watching him play. He’s a huge WWE fan, with Cody Rhodes as his favorite wrestler, and he’s never met a sandwich he didn’t like (although Jersey Mike’s tops the list).

Charleston’s coaches and teammates describe him as a steady, encouraging presence. While he’s not the loudest on the field, his actions speak volumes. He’s the teammate who quietly puts a hand on someone’s back when they’re upset, or who celebrates everyone’s success just as much as his own. When Charleston makes a big play, his team cheers louder—not out of pity, but because they recognize the extra effort and determination it takes to do what he does.

Whether it’s learning to ride a bike, throw a football, or swing a bat, Charleston finds a way to figure it out. He plays hard, works harder, and doesn’t let setbacks define him.

When his mom told him he had won the Game Changer award, Charleston grinned and said “Cool,” before tackling her in a hug. It was a simple moment that said everything. For his family, this recognition is deeply meaningful—an acknowledgment of the incredible effort, bravery, and joy that Charleston brings to everything he does.

Charleston’s story reminds us what youth sports are truly about: not just wins and losses, but heart, resilience, and lifting others up. He’s a role model to his peers and a source of inspiration for everyone who sees him play.

Congratulations, Charleston. Thank you for showing us what it looks like to never give up, never make excuses, and always play with heart. You are a true Game Changer.
